They built it and, at first, nobody came.
When the new Cottonwood Public Safety Communications Center opened last year on 2.7 acres off of Sixth Street, the city had been counting on attracting other agencies throughout the Verde Valley to take advantage and use the center for their own communications needs.
Some of the money from letting other agencies on board could help pay back some of the cost of the $3.5 million facility.
As it turned out, no one really seemed to be that interested.
That was then. This is now.
Last week the communications center came before the Cottonwood City Council in a work session to look for support in hiring seven new communications specialists for the center.
That’s because other agencies in the region are now lining up at Cottonwood’s door.
They include the Sedona, Verde Valley, Camp Verde and Montezuma-Rimrock fire districts.
