DPS: Shots fired from police gun

Published:

Investigators have determined that shots fired during the deadly brawl between Cottonwood police and members of an Idaho family at Wal-Mart came from an officer’s gun.

The three shots — which killed Enoch Gaver, wounded David Gaver and Sgt. Jeremy Daniels — were fired from the weapon of officer Richard Hicks, according to a report from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Circumstances surrounding the weapon’s discharge weren’t disclosed.

DPS is conducting the investigation because it involves a police shooting.

Further details are being withheld until the investigation is complete.

Daniels, 31, was released from the hospital last week. He was shot in the leg.

“He’s doing well,” said Sgt. Tod Moore, a spokesman with the Cottonwood Police Department. “He’s hobbling around. He’s in good spirits.”

Daniels remains on administrative leave along with Hicks, 21.

Meanwhile, Cottonwood police officers are stationed in the Wal-Mart parking lot at the request of store officials.
