Scoreboard bought, fields on hold

Published:

A crane pulled onto the baseball field early at Butler Park early Thursday morning, March 26.

It was there to help install a new scoreboard for the local Little League. There was a desperate need for something new, said Michael Marshall, Camp Verde Parks and Recreation coordinator.

“We checked to see if we could get the old one fixed but it was just too old,” Marshall said.

Gary Barnes, a board member with the Camp Verde Little League, said that the board had been in use since at least 1990 and likely longer than that.

Marshall said that it would have cost $1,250 just to replace the wireless control unit and it was mid-February before the town found out that the manufacturer wouldn’t even be able to repair the scoreboard.

The new one was shipped into town a week before, Marshall said.

The scoreboard was manufactured by Kentucky-based Varsity Scoreboards.

All together, including shipping, the new scoreboard cost just over $3,170, Marshall said.

The Little League organization threw in $2,000 in donations, Marshall said, to help get the scoreboard purchased.

The town helped out with the rest.
