The Montezuma-Rimrock Fire District is today a professional organization dedicated to serving the community.
In the beginning, though, it was just a group of neighbors looking to help protect each other.
Bonnie Reay, a paramedic and longtime veteran of the fire district, talked a bit about the history of the district last week in front of members of the Beaver Creek Preservation and Historical Society.
It’s a relatively new group that has hit the ground running over the past year to spread the word about the community.
Reay herself has been with the district since July 1979 and plans to retire soon. The district got its start more than a decade before Reay signed up, however.
“It was June 1968. It was a hot summer day and kind of breezy,” Reay said. “A guy on Sycamore decided to burn trash.”
Reay said the trash burning got a little out of control.
