Lobos beat all league opponents to claim title

Published:

Eighth-grade guards Alejandro Castillo and Chaz Taylor combined for 25 points in each of two games March 7 to propel Cottonwood Middle School to its second Quad City League championship in three years.

The 13-point wins by the Lobos over Granite Mountain and Bradshaw Mountain middle schools at the league tournament may be the last for 20-year head coach Scott Sanderlin. The brother of Bill Sanderlin, athletic director for the Cottonwood Oak-Creek School District, is ready to conclude his career on top.

“I told my brother, this is probably it,” he said. “I think I’m done.

“I always change my mind, though. I feel like I know right now, but then when the season comes around again, I’m not sure.”

Regardless of whether or not Sanderlin ultimately changes his mind, this season has been one to remember for the Lobos, who finished 21-3 and undefeated against Quad City opponents.

“This was a great team to coach,” he said. “They were just awesome, the way they came out in the championship game — like a well-oiled machine.”
