Young Cowboys seek return to State

Published:

Both the baseball and softball teams at Camp Verde High School begin preparing for the May postseason Thursday, Feb. 26, at two three-day preseason tournaments.

Driving head coach Will Davis’ emerging Cowboys baseball team is a return to the state tournament. CVHS hadn’t missed it for 12 seasons until last spring, in which it won just five games.

“We have a legitimate shot,” Davis said. “We have two front-line starters, which is what it takes in high school baseball to win games and make a playoff run.”

In softball, head coach Henry Smith has a deficit he can’t make up, as senior Danya Weir was lost for the season in January after a rodeo horse fell on her leg and broke it.

Sophomore Ezekial Casillas, left, scampers home, past Camp Verde High School head coach Will Davis, who holds another runner from third base during a Feb. 20 scrimmage. The Cowboys want to get back to State, which they missed last season for the first time in 12 years.
