Camp Verde High School had home court against the last team to make it into the first round of the Division III girls basketball state tournament Feb. 18.
What the Cowboys [24-5] did not have was senior Mariah Daniels and it made all the difference, head coach Mark Showers said, in a 43-36 loss to Chinle High School.
“Since Mariah went down, we’ve struggled offensively,” Showers said. “You try to do all these crazy things just to get some offensive output and we were just short.”
Daniels was the Cowboys’ all-around best player this season, leading CVHS to 17 wins and two losses against divisional competition while averaging double figures in both points and rebounds from the post.
A Jan. 31 knee injury, suffered during a game at Sedona Red Rock High School ended her high school basketball career.
“Our go-to [player] was sitting on the bench with a knee injury,” Showers said. “You don’t have a 17-2 regular season and call it a flop. But [if] you don’t have a go-to, or something like that, you leave it to chance.”
