Gov. Doug Ducey has come out of the gate with a number of proposals, including a budget for education across the state.
That proposed budget has some local school districts in the Verde Valley concerned.
Particularly worrying to some administrators is a proposal for school districts to move 5 percent more spending into the classroom.
While that may not sound too bad on the surface, Mingus Union High School District Superintendent Paul Tighe said that “the devil is always in the details.”
Tighe issued a statement last week outlining his particular concerns about how the proposed budget could affect his district.
Tighe said that the proposed state budget would cut deeply into spending on K-12 education.
Based on Tighe’s projections, if the proposed budget were to be passed for the next fiscal year, the Mingus budget would be short $159,000.
“When people ask will the budget hurt Mingus, the answer is ‘yes,’” Tighe said.
