Marauders ousted at home by defending state champions

Published:

Saturday, Feb. 7, was a great day for senior Miguel Gonzalez in the second round of the Division III boys soccer tournament at Mingus Union High School.

It was not the MUHS midfielder, though, but a striker from defending state champion Coronado High School who had three goals in a 4-3 win over the Marauders.

“I believe he’s the best player in the state,” head coach Calvin Behlow said. “The guy gets the ball and he takes care of it.”

The loss was the Marauders’ second straight in the second round of the playoffs but their first home setback this season. Since the season opener, a 3-2 setback in Bullhead City against Mohave High School, MUHS had been on an 11-game winning streak, garnering the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.

“We battled,” Behlow said. “We didn’t make a whole lot of mistakes.”
