Proposed zoning changes to allow for expansion at Alcantara Vineyard and Winery are going back to the drawing board for adjustment.
The owners of the winery, located off the Verde River between Camp Verde and Cottonwood, are hoping for permission to alter the planned area development zoning for the property to allow for things like townhomes and a 20-room country inn.
The zoning changes were approved in December by the Yavapai County Planning and Zoning Commission by a 5-2 vote.
Commissioners George Lee and Curtis Linder voted against the move, citing concerns over the impact of increased commercial activity on the 87-acre property.
The winery has been operating its tasting room and agricultural activities on about 15 acres of that land.
While the owners reported they have never had noise complaints, they agreed to tweak the design plans after concern about the possibility for noise to travel along the Verde River.
While the Planning and Zoning Commission approved the plans, the Yavapai County Board of Supervisors sent it back during its Jan. 20 meeting.
“Alcantara has become a destination driver with the Arizona Department of Tourism,” the owners, the Predmore family, wrote in a letter of intent to the county.
The Predmores said the property could accommodate many more people under the proposed changes.
