Mingus wrestler suffers first loss of season at Doc Wright

Published:

Senior wrestler Wyatt Midkiff had his first setback of the season for Mingus Union High School, losing by a five-point decision Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Doc Wright Invitational.

“Those bodies were flying,” said Tim McKeever, Marauders head wrestling coach. “It was a great match; we just ended up on the wrong end of it.”

Prior to Midkiff’s 13-8 loss to Ruben Mendez of Tolleson High School, he had won 28 straight matches — a streak dating back to the 220-pound state championship his junior year.

“I’m not disappointed in any of the guys,” McKeever said. “It’s just disappointing when we lose. I just don’t like losing to sectional [opponents].”

Midkiff was one of just two Marauders wrestlers to make it to the second day of the wrestling tournament at Section I rival Winslow High School, as MUHS finished 25th overall out of 33 teams from Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.
