Council votes to raise sales tax

Published:

The Camp Verde Town Council approved an increase in the town’s transaction tax and use tax by a 4-3 vote at its Wednesday, Jan. 7 meeting.

Vice Mayor Jackie Baker voted against the measure, along with council members Carol German and Bradford Gordon.

Transaction taxes, which include the retail sales tax along with a number of other economic activities, will rise from 3 percent to 3.65 percent.

The use tax will be raised from 2 percent to 3 percent, Camp Verde Finance Director Mike Showers said

“I want both council and community to understand this is not an effort to convince you that these things need to be passed,” Showers said.

A use tax increase doesn’t affect many businesses in Camp Verde, Showers said, and few even have to deal with it.

The increase is expected to bring in around an additional $400,000 a year to town coffers.

The money is expected to be used for capital improvement projects.
