Cowboys fall short in Shootout final

Published:

Center Mariah Daniels put up 21 points and 14 rebounds and fellow senior Rayana Chatter was also an all-tournament selection Dec. 30 for Camp Verde High School despite falling three points short of the championship of the Yvonne Johnson Memorial Shootout at CVHS.

“I was glad to be able to play somebody that pushed us,” said Mark Showers, Cowboys head girls basketball coach, after a 57-54 loss to Many Farms High School in the finals of the shootout. “I was disappointed in the girls’ second and third quarters, but they pushed through adversity and finished strong.”

Daniels also had 21 points against Walden Grove High School, which the Cowboys beat along with Mayer and Ash Fork high schools in their first three tournament games by a combined total of 153-53.

Despite the three-point loss in the finals against the Lobos, they remained ranked one spot behind CVHS at sixth in the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s first Division III power rankings as of Saturday, Jan. 3.
