Eleven Camp Verde High School varsity wrestlers resumed their winning ways Dec. 10 with home wins over Mingus Union High School and three other opponents.
Although sophomore Hayden Uhler and junior Alex Casillas were held out of action after what head coach Tracey Tudor called “mild injuries,” seven other Cowboys wrestlers went undefeated, edging the Marauders, 48-30, in addition to wins of 32 points or more over Mayer High School and Arizona Lutheran and Greyhills academies.
“They’re both state champs,” Tudor said. “We just wanted to throw a rookie 113-pounder in there, and he fought valiant, man.”
Freshman Daniel White went 2-2 in 2:45 of mat time in Uhler’s place, with both wins by forfeit and both losses by pin.
While neither the 113-pound Uhler nor the 120-pound Casillas will be wrestling Friday or Saturday, Dec. 19 or 20, at the Veterans Memorial Invitational in Window Rock, Tudor expects both wrestlers to return for the Mile High Invitational in Prescott Valley after the new year.
The other defending state champions for the Cowboys — senior Ryan Allred, junior Matt Mejia and sophomore Ezekial Casillas — combined to go a perfect 12-0 and record seven pins as CVHS beat Arizona Lutheran, 63-21; Greyhills, 60-12; and Mayer, 59-18.
