Seven roundabouts planned for 260

Published:

State Route 260 between Camp Verde and Cottonwood will eventually include an estimated seven roundabouts as part of the state’s plan to widen the heavily-traveled highway.

Deborah Ranney with the Town of Camp Verde Public Works Division said the Town Council would be looking at possible improvements and that roundabouts were on the menu.

The Arizona State Transportation Board has made funds available for improvements to the highway between Thousand Trails and Interstate 17.

The ADOT board voted to include the project on the organization’s five-year plan, setting aside $66 million in funding for the work.

The allocation provides $4 million for design work this year and another $62 million for eventual construction, now planned for 2016.

The approval came over the objection of ADOT engineers, some of whom were concerned that new projects of this scale could tie up funding needed to maintain the state’s existing highway system.

An effort was made several years ago to see a four-lane highway between Cottonwood and Camp Verde, a heavily-traveled road both for people heading to Cottonwood and for people trying to reach Interstate 17.
