Speed trumps size for new Marauders basketball coaches

Published:

Mingus Union High School basketball is looking to win small this season.

New girls head coach Dave Moncibaez has the experience, from his previous years as co-coach with father Art Moncibaez, to work with a 5-foot, 10-inch junior center starting for his young team in its first home game Tuesday, Dec. 2, against Sedona Red Rock High School.

Not so fortunate was first-year boys head coach Dave Beery.

“The few guys we thought would end up playing didn’t,” Beery said. “If anything, we got shorter. Honestly, just because of some of our limited physical attributes, we’re going to have to take some chances on D and throw some different defenses out there.”

The Marauders girls basketball team played in a Queen Creek tournament Monday, Nov. 24. Junior Vivian Koeppe, No. 21, concentrates as she lines up her free throw.
