Wood bats fail to stop HDH dynasty

Published:

There’s nothing illegal about HDH — it’s just a dynasty.

The first of two HDH teams rebounded from its first and only loss of the season, to Mikes 12 pack, to win its fourth straight Cottonwood Parks and Recreation men’s softball league championship on a seventh-inning single Oct. 29 by catcher Jimmy Midget.

“He’s the old man on the team,” head coach Robert Gonzales quipped about Midget, 43, a former Mississippi State baseball player who had been plagued by groin and shoulder injuries all fall. “He used to be our shortstop, and a good outfielder, but he doesn’t have the speed he used to have.”

After an undefeated regular season, HDH1/Total Building came out flat in a 13-3 loss to Mikes 12 pack but got another chance, jumping out to a 6-2 first-inning lead as Jon Ayala, Joey Chamberlin, Jesse Timm, utilityman Jose Vava and 21-year-old shortstop Carlos Abrigo, a former three-sport star at Mingus Union High School, all hit safely or scored.

“Our whole team stepped up this year,” Gonzales said. “We’re family. We’ve been together since 2002.”
