The Mingus Union High School theater program was recognized by the Arizona Thespian Society as having the best school production in the state this year for its performance of William Shakespeare’s comedy “Much Ado About Nothing.”
The society is a group dedicated to promoting theater in schools around the state.
Schools from around the state enter the annual competition. Representatives from the state theater board travel to see the plays and choose a winner.
The Mingus students will now travel to Phoenix later this month to perform the winning production at the society’s thespian festival at the city’s convention center.
“I never expected to win with Shakespeare, but they nailed it,” Theater Program Director James Ball said of his students. “It’s exciting, a great experience.”
Ball said he’s been getting great help from the school to prepare for the logistics of moving the production to Phoenix on Friday, Nov. 21.
