Residents aim to save clubhouse

Published:

The Clarkdale Historical Society and Museum is looking to preserve the old clubhouse at what was once the Verde Valley Country Club.

The building, near Peck’s Lake, was built in 1922.

“The building, with its lounge, dining room, kitchen and locker rooms for men and women became the social center for many families for decades,” a report from Town Manager Gayle Mabery’s office read. “The picturesque nine-hole golf course was developed in 1924 and was host to the Arizona State Golf Association championships in 1925 and 1929.”

The clubhouse is owned by Freeport McMoRan, the company that owns much of the old mining land and other property around Clarkdale.

An inspection of the property listed the building as condemned after a Freeport McMoRan specialist looked at its dilapidated condition.
