The Town of Camp Verde will be looking at what steps to take this week regarding opposition to a sales tax on food.
The town currently charges no tax on food, a practice that differs from neighboring communities.
The Town Council recently voted 4-3 to make food, like that bought at the grocery store, subject to a 3 percent tax.
Technically, the decision doesn’t create a new tax but revokes an exemption that has allowed food to be sold tax-free, at least as far as potential municipal revenue is concerned.
The tax was supposed to go into effect Monday, Dec. 1.
A political committee, Citizens Committed to Reducing Regulatory Burdens, was formed to circulate a petition to force a public vote on the issue.
The effort resulted in 273 signatures by last week’s deadline. It needed 199.
