Girls soccer falls in first round at Blue Ridge

Published:

The end was much like the beginning for the Camp Verde High School girls soccer team Thursday, Oct. 30.

In a rematch of a 5-1 loss to Blue Ridge High School in their opener Sept. 5 at the Show Low Invitational, sophomore Raiven Alvey’s goal 10 minutes into the second half couldn’t prevent the same result at the undefeated, top-seeded Yellow Jackets in the Division IV state quarterfinals.

“It was kind of a similar game, actually,” said Pat Allen, Cowboys head girls soccer coach, after the 5-1 defeat. “We stayed with them in the first game, too. We weren’t being manhandled by them.”

Down 3-0 despite spending the majority of the game’s first 20 minutes in the Yellow Jackets zone, Allen pulled Alvey back to the wing from the forward striker position as part of a second-half focus on kick-starting the Cowboys offense. It worked — just not long enough.

“I’m real happy with how they played the first 10 minutes,” Allen said. “Then we had a drop off, which is pretty normal for us. The girls started playing real frantic.”
