The Town of Camp Verde adopted the 2012 International Building Codes in August, a standard that governs construction.
Some residents feel the codes are too restrictive.
The council listened to some of those concerns at its Oct. 15 meeting.
While the council didn’t reverse its adoption of the code, it did listen to Camp Verde Building Official Robert Foreman say that the town had room to be flexible when it comes to working within the code.
Councilwoman Carol German placed the discussion on the agenda to give concerned residents a chance to be heard.
Local resident Robb Witt had collected signatures as part of a referendum effort to have the council overturn the codes but the petition was rejected because of a technicality, German said.
“We’re all here because we care about our community,” Witt said.
Witt said that he went around different neighborhoods knocking on doors and found that there was a lot of emotion tied up in the issue.
For Witt and several others who spoke, the issue boils down to too much regulation.
