Cowboys hope for two road wins after Senior Night shutout

Published:

Whether or not the Camp Verde High School football team is better than its 1-7 record is a moot point following a 57-0 loss Friday, Oct. 17, to Joy Christian High School.

Win or lose, the focus for the Cowboys and head coach Steve Darby after their final home game has become how they can finish on the road.

“I can tell you that’s not what we would have done,” Darby said after Eagles backup quarterback Hunter Cole threw a touchdown pass and passed for a two-point conversion on the final play of the game to post their largest margin of victory to date in a 7-1 season. “It’s unfortunate that their coach decided to pass with 25 seconds left. That was probably a statement, I’m guessing.”

The Eagles chose to go for the final score in spite of a clock that ran throughout the second half due to a 42-0 Joy Christian lead, leading to some postgame words between head coach Brian Cole’s staff and Darby’s.

“I know I’m not crying, but this really sucks,” said senior running back Jordan Reay after being held to just three yards rushing on the night after averaging 100 yards per game on the ground last fall. “Maybe because our record wasn’t as good. I just want to have a game where we can run up the score and run up a bunch of yards.”
