Darby follows faith in seniors, future after loss

Senior Jace Terry, No. 87, catches a pass for Camp Verde High School in the midst of three Sedona Red Rock High School defenders during the Cowboys’ 35-6 loss to the Scorpions on Sept. 26. The Cowboys will host Joy Christian High School for Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 17.

It was a great start for the Camp Verde High School football team at Kingman Academy, Friday, Oct. 10, but it would once again end in frustration for head coach Steve Darby and his varsity.

“It drives you crazy,” Darby said. “We had good drives all night long. We just make mistakes.”

After riding out to a 12-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, turnovers and other miscues by the Cowboys [1-6] led to a 26-point second quarter by the Tigers, who went on to shut out the Cowboys in the second half in a 26-18 defeat.

“We’ve been plagued with these mistakes all year,” Darby said. “But, in the future, these mistakes won’t happen if the young kids can stay together and stay committed.”

CVHS was stopped on fourth down and goal six inches away from the potential game-tying touchdown on their final offensive play of the game.

“I would rather be in a tight game like that, even though it’s heartbreaking,” Darby said. “Last year, we had four games in which we were blown out by 40 or more points; this year, that hasn’t happened. So I’m proud of the kids — that shows we’re heading in the right direction.”
