Cowboys sixth-grader outruns rest of conference for win

Published:

She started running “just around my block” a year ago, but now she owns the fastest time of any fifth- or sixth-grade cross-country runner in Prescott or the Verde Valley.

This is just one way in which life has changed for Maya Hedges, a sixth-grader at Camp Verde Middle School, who successfully balanced a two-sport schedule this fall, culminating Oct. 1 in the championship of the Verde Valley Conference. For her efforts, Hedges was named Student Athlete of the Month in October at CVMS after running a mile-and-a-half course in 10 minutes at Heritage Middle School in Chino Valley.

“That’s her best time — ‘til next year,” said her head coach, Rhonda Koeppe, who just completed her first season as CVMS cross-country coach after a seven-year hiatus from Cottonwood Middle School. “She did get better every time. I’d like to think that she put in an undefeated season.”
