The Salt River Project provides drinking water to residents in the Phoenix area, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country.
That water depends on sources from up north, including the Verde River.
That water in turn depends on healthy forests and SRP is working to support efforts for forest restoration that will ideally cut down on the number of catastrophic fires that can do serious damage to the water supply.
The company is also running a campaign to help make its customers more aware of the connection between the forest and their water sources.
People living in the city might not always make the connection between the water coming out of their faucet and forests miles away and typically out of sight.
Rebecca Davidson, a senior water rights analyst with SRP, outlined some of the efforts last week in Cottonwood at a meeting of the Verde River Basin Partnership.
