Mingus football in no condition to win yet

Published:

It would be a challenge for even a milk carton to find the Mingus Union High School varsity football team in the second half of its first two games.

“We’ve got to get better,” a tired head coach Bob Young said after the Marauders’ 41-14 loss to Cactus High School in their home opener Friday, Sept. 5. “We’re just not very good in any phase right now. We’ve got to make some big improvements.”

In the second 24 minutes of losses to Cactus and at Snowflake High School, 37-6, in the season opener Aug. 29, MUHS [0-2] has been outscored 45-0.

“We’ve got to get in better shape,” Young said. “Condition-wise, we’re gassed in the second half.”

Going into the locker room for halftime of both games, the Marauders hung within a touchdown of both the Lobos and the Cobras. Senior wide receiver Herb Tiffany hauled in a 55-yard strike from junior quarterback Jordan Upham to tie Cactus in the first quarter, then senior linebacker Orlando Machado stepped in front of a pass from Cactus junior quarterback Preston Guerra and ran the interception 16 yards into the end zone to put the Marauders up 14-7 with 10:25 to play until halftime.
