It’s the smallest incorporated town in the area, but Jerome had a large field of candidates seeking election to the Town Council.
There were 11 people running for five seats and after the Aug. 26 primary election, the five people who earned the most votes will go on to likely change the makeup of the council.
Another major issue on the ballot for Jerome voters concerned how the town treats the existence of vacation rentals.
Property owners renting homes to short-term visitors has been a contentious issue in the small town, where an argument has been ongoing about regulation of short-term rentals vs. the rights of property owners.
The council approved a measure changing the rules governing vacation rentals last year, defining rules and determining what vacation rentals could be allowed per a number of neighborhoods designated by the town.
A measure on the ballot in this year’s primary, Proposition 428, would have upheld the council’s previous change to the rules, but voters soundly rejected it, 116-40.
