Camp Verde girls poised to win games the Cowboy way

Published:

By the numbers, the girls soccer team at Camp Verde High School is due for a successful fall.

“We will definitely get to the playoffs,” head coach Pat Allen said. “We’ve got a very experienced team. We have a ton of speed. I think we’re going to be awesome this year.”

It has been 14 years since the program won a state title, but with 23 girls in the fold going into the Show Low Tournament on Friday through Saturday, Sept. 5 through 6, such speed and experience could make up for the last three seasons, in which the girls averaged just five wins each fall.

“Last year, we had some injuries that really hurt us,” he said, reflecting upon a 1-8-1 mark in Section II. “We just lost a couple of games we never should have lost. And it was pretty even in the division last year — it wouldn’t take much to put you down behind someone else.”

But the schedule for Show Low, in which the Cowboys, over two days, will face defending state champion Blue Ridge along with Round Valley and St. John’s high schools, has Allen excited to win now.

“I just got it, I saw who we played first, and I’m like, ‘That’s all I needed to see,’” he said.
