It was a short retirement for Camp Verde High School physical education and weightlifting teacher Michael Prow.

After 33 years as a cross-country and track coach at Valparaiso High School in Indiana, Prow retired from the school — but not before accepting an offer to continue coaching and teaching at CVHS.

The cross-country volunteer assistant coach for Cowboys head coach Mike O’Callaghan will be taking over for former track head coach Lori Showers in the spring, bringing an emphasis on core lifting in the weight room with him that he hopes will be infectious.

“I want to bring some enthusiasm and hopefully get some more boys out from the middle school and meet at least once a week with the elementary school kids as well,” he said. “I’m a big believer in strength training and core.”

Prow has needed to be flexible as he hopes the core exercises will make his runners, as the girls team only has four runners so far. He has been talking to other fall sports about sharing players.

“We still don’t have a full team for girls; we need one more,” he said.
