Town promotes local shopping

Clarkdale promoted “Independents Week” to encourage buying locally to help stimulate the economy. One such location was the Copper Art Museum, in the former Clarkdale High School, whose admittance fee grants access to view all the ways society has used copper through the ages, from piping and electrical applications, to sculptures and architectural embellishments.

Clarkdale made an effort to get people to shop at local businesses last week in what it called “Independents Week.”

The town tried to promote several local independent merchants in an effort to help stimulate the local economy.

According to the announcement of the effort, local shopping “encourages support for the independent business people that help make our community unique and keep our local economy strong. When people spend money with local businesses, more of that money returns to the community.”

Beth Escobar, a senior planner with Clarkdale’s Community Development Department, said that this is the first time the town has tried to promote shopping locally in such a manner.

The move came after the town partnered with Local First Arizona earlier this year, Escobar said.

Local First Arizona is an organization dedicated to promoting local businesses across the state.
