Smith opens a dollar store after long career of trucking

Published:

Tim Smith drove a truck for 20 years.
“It was a refrigerated box truck,” Smith said. “I did route work.”

Today, Smith runs a dollar store in the Outpost Mall in Camp Verde.

Smith opened the shop at the end of March and he says business is going pretty well.

Down at the less-visible end of the strip mall, Smith said that business was hurt somewhat by the closure of Alco, which shut its doors shortly after Smith set up his store.

“I’m down here at the end and after Alco closed there was less foot traffic,” Smith said.

Smith runs the store with the help of two employees.

“They’re great,” Smith said.

Smith is originally from Griffith, Ind., a steel mill town in the northwest corner of the Hoosier State.

Smith moved to Mesa with his parents after his dad retired from the steel mill in 1978.

“I was the youngest so I went along,” Smith said.
