Practice made a perfect summer tournament June 22 for Camp Verde High School girls basketball.
Following a solid month of two-hour Monday practices that began their summer, the Cowboys rode Mariah Daniels, Dusty Dowdle and Gabby Ontiveros to five wins, no losses and the championship of the Summer Slam at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego.
“That tournament was all about second effort,” head girls basketball coach Mark Showers said. “We just hustled. If it wasn’t for second efforts, we would have gone 1-3 and wouldn’t have even made it to the championship.”
The title was the first for Showers and CVHS in the decade-long history of the tournament, highlighted by the Cowboys’ championship win over Tucson Marana High School and a 20-plus-point blowout of head coach Dave Moncibaez’s Mingus Union High School girls basketball team in an early game June 20.
“We’ve won summer tournaments before,” Showers said. “My wife [Lori] asked me afterward, ‘Is this the best team you’ve ever had?’
“I said, ‘No. Probably third.’”
