A local Camp Verde student has won top Arizona honors in breakaway roping and will be traveling with a team to represent the state at the finals of the rodeo event in Wyoming.
Danya Weir, who will be a senior next school year at Camp Verde High School, won the state championship at the calf-roping event at the Arizona High School Rodeo Association finals earlier this month.
Breakaway roping involves getting the rope around the calf from horseback, but it’s not thrown and tied.
That earned Weir a place on the Arizona team that will be representing the state at the national finals set for next month in Rock Springs, Wyo.
It may be the “national” finals, but participants come from 42 states, Canada and Australia to compete.
The competition offers participants the chance to win around $200,000 in prizes in addition to more than $350,000 in scholarships.
