The U.S. Forest Service is considering three alternatives for managing the Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic corridor.
The creek was granted Wild and Scenic River status by the U.S. Congress in 2009, a classification that provides important federal protections to Fossil Creek. Fossil Creek and the Upper Verde River are the only Arizona waterways to have that distinction.
Since the century-old Childs and Irving hydroelectric power plants were decommissioned a few years ago by APS, the waterway has been restored to its natural flow.
The Forest Service has worked to manage the area to protect it in the face of increased visitation to the creek since flow has been restored.
