After three days off for Memorial Day weekend, the Camp Verde High School girls basketball players were scheduled to go back to work in the gym for an hour-and-a-half Tuesday, May 27, in preparation for three summer tournaments.
The common theme of the practices was, and will be, simple: Get Mariah Daniels the ball.
“Not that she’s going to do all the scoring, but she needs to touch the ball,” Cowboys athletic director and head girls basketball coach Mark Showers said of the nearly six foot tall senior-to-be post player.
“Last year, we ran a read-react kind of offense. This year, with this group, we’re going to have to spend more time on post entry — set plays probably through the post, since she passes the ball well, can find open players and can score.”
Besides Daniels, Showers will be directing a group in practice that includes senior guards Rayana Chatter, Kayla Sandoval and Gerlaura Vaughn, junior forward Allee Drake and junior guard Gabby Ontiveros as well as anywhere between eight and 13 junior varsity and freshman players — all of whom will also be practicing the evening of Wednesday, May 28, beginning at 5:30 p.m., for tournaments in Prescott and San Diego and Tuesday games at Coconino High School through the end of June.
