Baseball, softball teams will come into their own on diamond next year

Freshman Wyatt Howe hits the ball fair after hitting several foul balls in a Camp Verde High School home loss April 24 to Fountain Hills High School. The second baseman will be expected to provide more with his bat for a more experienced Cowboys team next season that should be ready to challenge for the section title after freshman growing pains led to a five-win season.

There are years of reasons why the Camp Verde High School softball and baseball diamonds don’t back right up to each other like they do at other schools.

Those reasons come down to a simple truth that will be in ample evidence to fans next spring: These teams will drive the ball as hard as they ran this season.

In all, the Cowboys baseball and softball teams lose only five players from clubs that, respectively, averaged batting .334 and collected 13 of its 22 wins by run-rule — with only three of those seniors regular starters for either team.
