Camp Verde High School will be a shot put state championship contender this weekend as two juniors look to take their place among Arizona’s best throwers.
Juniors Curtis Corder and Viola Logston will represent the Cowboys at the Division III state track and field championships beginning Friday, May 9, at 3 p.m. at Mesa Community College.
“He’s ready,” CVHS assistant track coach Pam Edgerton, who is in charge of the throwers, said of Corder. “He has gotten progressively better all year long, so as long as he doesn’t overdo it, he should have another [personal record] at State.”
Corder, a letterman in wrestling and football as well, has already improved his shot put throw by four feet in only his second season of competitive track, with his latest PR coming at the Yavapai County Championships, where he threw 41 feet, 6½ inches for his first-ever gold medal in high school track.
“My first PR was 38 [feet] at Wickenburg,” Corder recalled. “I thought I peaked early in Sedona when I PR’d in discus, but I feel like that was when I was just getting started. Almost every meet, I’ve PR’d.”
