After a 5-4 road upset of Prescott High School, the Mingus Union High School boys tennis team ended its season on the other side of that score Tuesday, May 6, at Williams Field High School in Gilbert.
The Marauders could not overcome seniors Tanner Caron and Gary Baker getting swept in their singles and doubles matches, falling 5-4 to the Black Hawks in the Division III state quarterfinals.
“We lost a tight one,” said head boys tennis coach Tarrin Walz. “Great team match overall.”
Caron came back in his singles match from being down a 6-2 set to junior Nicholas Kohnhorst, tying the second set, 6-6, before Kohnhorst pulled away to win the tiebreaker, 7-1. Baker fell to senior Clint Smith in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, and he and Caron took the duo of No. 1 singles player Porter Derrick and junior Braden Shumway to the limit before losing, 9-7.
“These kids are awesome,” Walz said. “Amazing athletes.”
