Golf needs one more Beauty of round to get to State

Published:

Sophomore Joel Beauty was one nine-hole round of 40 away from State when something unexpected happened upon his arrival Saturday, April 26, at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott — the weather.

“It was actually snowing when we left,” Cowboys head coach Chris Fuller said. “We got there Saturday morning around 7 [a.m.] to practice our drives. At 8, by the time we got back in the bus, it was practically a whiteout.”

The sudden weekend storm that kept outdoor athletes home throughout the Verde Valley sent the Cowboys home prematurely April 26, in spite of Beauty’s 42 in winds of close to 50 mph on the front nine holes of the south golf course at Antelope Hills on Friday, April 25.

“On Friday, we had 40, 50 mph winds,” Fuller said. “As a smaller school that plays in the spring, we have to deal with the windy season in April. The fact that Joel still managed to shoot an 88 in those kinds of windy conditions is very promising.”

The conditions kept the Cowboys out of consideration for the invitational title, though, as sophomore Vance Tewawina was the next-lowest scorer on the CVHS varsity golf ladder, shooting a 108 over the full 18 holes April 25. As it stood, the second day of the High Desert Invitational was canceled, with golfers’ best rounds over either the front or the back nine holes on the south course April 25 taken into consideration for State qualifiers.
