The history of Jerome, high up on the mountain, is fairly well-known in the area.
As home to what was one of the largest copper-producing areas in the world, the town grew to become the third-largest city in Arizona, home to some 15,000 residents.
Then the mines shut down, and the people who lived there left, except for a few.
The stories of what happened afterwards have been collected in a new book called “Home Sweet Jerome, Death and Rebirth of Arizona’s Richest Copper Mining City,” recently published from an author who lived in Jerome for more than two decades.
