SWAT, firefighters respond to fictional gunman on college campus

Published:

Cadets from Yavapai College’s Verde Valley Fire Academy and students from the college’s EMT class teamed up with members from various local emergency response agencies to conduct a joint training exercise recently at Yavapai College’s Verde Campus, located in Clarkdale.

This full-scale exercise was based on an active shooter scenario and took place in the registration building of the college.
Artificial smoke filled the building as “victims” lay on the floor with various wounds; some screaming in pain while others didn’t move. First to arrive on scene were several officers from the Yavapai College Police

Department. The smoke and the noise contributed to the confusion as they quickly assessed the situation, discovering a barricaded gunman in one of the offices. They contained the gunman and called for additional resources.

Members from the Verde Valley Regional SWAT, made up of officers from the Cottonwood and Sedona police departments as well as the Camp Verde Marshal’s Office, arrived and formed an entry team, protecting the fire cadets as they went inside to assess, stabilize and remove those who had been wounded by the gunman’s rampage.
