Corder, Logston, Valdez fire up young Cowboys track team

Published:

Camp Verde High School junior throwers Viola Logston and Curtis Corder qualified for the Division III state track tournament, hitting new personal bests along with sophomore sprinter Luis Valdez at the Red Rock Invitational in Sedona on Saturday, April 5.

For the second straight meet, Logston set a new school record in the shot put, throwing 37 feet, three inches to finish second, 18 inches short of defending Division III state shot put champ Heather Calandra of Mingus Union High School.

“Every time she’s thrown, she’s set a new school record,” said CVHS head track coach Lori Showers. “Heather’s a really good thrower, but depending on who’s throwing good on a given day, Viola can definitely challenge her.”

With backup from sophomore Alyssa Watkins, who won the freshman/sophomore discus with a personal best and “her best throw of the year,” according to Showers, Logston threw the discus 89 feet, four inches to finish sixth at the invitational.

“[Logston]’s improved probably three-and-a-half feet since last year,” Showers said. “That’s huge and difficult to do. She worked really hard in the weight room.

“I think she’s going to be our top finisher: It gives her a goal. She’s amazing.”
