Sophomore Joel Beauty shot his third state qualifying score of the season as the Camp Verde High School golf team took down Arizona College Preparatory Academy by 24 strokes Thursday, March 20.
Beauty shot a two-over-par 38, his best score to date on the front nine holes at Verde Santa Fe Golf Course in Cornville. He opened the season shooting a four-over-par 40 against Sedona Red Rock High School, the Cowboys’ only other match on their home course prior to this week.
“Joel is in a great situation right now because he has three qualifying scores, and we’ve only played four of the 14 matches on our schedule,” CVHS head golf coach Chris Fuller said.
Beauty led the Cowboys, who overcame the absence of sophomore Vance Tewawina to shoot a 187 as a team, 24 strokes better than the Knights at 211.
“I do think that Vance will possibly be catching up, once he gets eligible,” Fuller said. “Vance has one qualifying leg [for state]. I do think Vance can make it there as well.”
Chandler-based Arizona College Prep is the third team CVHS has bested this season, along with Parker and Chino Valley High Schools — and the youngest, only in its third year as a golf team, playing in Division III along with the Cowboys.
“I think they had couple of kids who shot very well,” Fuller said, “but after that, I think they had three very inexperienced kids.”
Beauty’s 38 was the only qualifying score March 20 for the Cowboys. Junior Brett Worth was next in line, shooting an eight-over-par 46, six strokes below Verde Santa Fe’s tournament-qualifying target score of 40, while senior Jayson Presmyk was four strokes off that pace with a 50. Junior Bodie Holowell added a 53 and senior Zach Trinidad had a 57 to round out the scoring for CVHS.
