Mingus track teams pick up where they left off in opener

Junior Jordan Bramblett took first place in the 3,200-meter for Mingus Union High School at the Northland Preparatory Academy Skydome Classic at Northern Arizona University on Tuesday, March 4. He also finished in third place in the 1,600-meter, already an improvement over his 15th-place finish for the Marauders at the state competition last spring as part of the boys track team’s 11th-place overall finish in Division III.

Sophomore Megan Goettl won her second 1,600-meter race in a row while senior sprinter Ryan Talbot also recorded two first-place finishes as Mingus Union High School’s track teams were runners-up at their season-opening meet in Flagstaff, the Northland Preparatory Academy Skydome Classic on Tuesday, March 4.

Junior Jordan Bramblett added a win in the 3,200-meter to Talbot’s sub-50 second victory in the 400-meter and first place, along with senior Dakota Hanks and juniors Mikey Gilboy and Javin Helsel, in the 4×400 relay. The Marauders finished 19 points short of Snowflake High School for second place.

“Javin, Dakota and Ryan were a big part of the 4×400 team last year,” Devore said. “Hopefully, by the end of the season as we mix and match, we’ll be able to figure out where the rest of the pieces fit.”

Senior Justine Taylor won the girls 400-meter as well, while fellow senior Heather Calandra threw over 38 feet to win the shot put on the way to a second-place finish for the girls team 11 points shy of Blue Ridge High School.

“There were some really good individual efforts,” said head track coach Yancey Devore. “Some kids stepped up and ran some really good races, made some really good throws.”
