Camp Verde High School’s golf team returns a core with the mix, the experience and, this year, close venues to get to the state tournament.
After starting three freshmen and two sophomores in most of last year’s matches, the Cowboys return four of those starters for a spring in which head coach Chris Fuller expects to have at least two of those advance on to the state tournament held this May at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott.
“It is my goal this year to send at least two players to the state tournament,” Fuller said. “I think we have the potential to send a few players to … Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott.”
The Cowboys will have plenty of experience on that course to go on, as the Cowboys have three dates on the schedule at Antelope Hills, including the two-day High Desert Invitational beginning at noon Friday, April 25.
CVHS will host five dual matches on its home golf course, Verde Santa Fe Country Club in Cornville, while only playing two away matches this season.
“I would also like to focus on having a couple of players place in the top 10 of the three invitational tournaments we will be attending this year,” Fuller said.
The Cowboys will also be travelling to the Wickenburg Invitational and, the weekend prior to state, will warm up with the Metro Invitational at Palmbrook Country Club in Sun City West in northwest Phoenix.
The Cowboys’ returning starting core includes juniors Bodie Holowell and Brett Worth along with sophomores Joel Beauty and Vance Tewawina.
“All four of these young men continue to improve upon their golf skills,” Fuller said. “I believe we will be extremely competitive this year.”
