Cowboys take second at two tournaments

Published:

Camp Verde Middle School’s basketball teams came close but could not get over the top to win the championship games of the Verde Valley Conference on Saturday, Feb. 1.

“I’ve got no complaints,” CVMS boys basketball head coach Donnie Shanks said following the Cowboys’ 34-31 defeat at the hands of the Clarkdale Jerome School. “Our kids played hard.”

The Cowboys advanced to the championship game of the conference girls tournament Feb. 1 at Mayer High School as well before losing 51-19 to Big Park Community School.

CVMS has too many students enrolled to compete at the small school state championships Friday through Saturday, Feb. 7 through 8 in Clarkdale, so the only chance for the Cowboys boys team was to take home the conference title at Beaver Creek School and advance to the Arizona state junior high championships in Phoenix.

“Clarkdale, they came to play,” Shanks said. “They’re a tough team.”
