Scorpions, January not kind to Cowboys

Published:

There is no way around it: Camp Verde High School’s boys basketball team has struggled this first month of 2014, mostly against sectional rivals.

The Cowboys [4-15] fell to 1-6 in Section III of Division III with a 75-49 home loss to Valley Christian High School on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Perhaps the most daunting results came in consecutive 30-plus-point losses to local rivals Sedona Red Rock High School. The Cowboys had already been handled by the Scorpions 78-41 at the Box Out Breast Cancer Invitational in Prescott Valley on Jan. 11 when they had to travel to SRRHS to play them again Jan. 14.

The result was no better, as the Scorpions demoralized the Cowboys 103-64.

“It was a hostile environment,” Wall said. “They certainly had some kids yelling at them. I was so proud of the way they played.”

Although Wall had removed all of his starters midway through the fourth quarter, Scorpions head boys basketball coach Greg Strickling called time out after a layup established a 34-point lead, but he did not substitute out the starters until there was 2:36 remaining.

“At that point, Coach Strickling was up by 36 points,” Wall said. “If I’m beating a team by 36 points, I would think good sportsmanship would say that I take my starters out when the other team takes theirs out.”
