Cowboys girls hoops stands up to state’s best

Published:

Even though he was home sick with the flu Saturday, Jan. 18, Camp Verde High School head girls basketball coach Mark Showers wasn’t at all down about his team’s 59-32 loss to undefeated Valley Christian High School.

“Although it was a 20-plus point loss, I watched the film and the girls played hard and were able to play nose-to-nose with the top ranked team in the state for periods of time in the game,” he said.

Assistant coaches Steve Hicks and Amy Wall coached in Showers’ place against the Trojans, who at 19-0 are the top-ranked team in Division III and just happen to be in Section II along with the Cowboys.

Junior Mariah Daniels continued her strong play on the interior, scoring 15 points to lead the Cowboys. Sophomore Gabby Ontiveros added seven points, while seniors Caitlin Harris and Maddy Showers added 10 and nine rebounds, respectively, to keep the Cowboys in contention on the boards.

This was the first sectional loss for the Cowboys [14-7], who were coming off a strong performance Friday, Jan. 17, against Glendale Prep, winning 57-40.
