Cowboys are team to beat as home meets wrap up

Published:

Camp Verde High School has emerged this year as the wrestling team to beat in the Verde Valley.
The Cowboys tied fifth out of 32 teams at the Mile High Challenge and swept a six-way meet at Phoenix Christian High School to place several wrestlers in contention for state — and have one more wrestler in their back pocket to boot.

“Isaiah McReynolds had an injury from football he reinjured at the Moon Valley Tournament,” said Cowboys Head Wrestling Coach Bob Weir. “He’s going to be ready by sectionals.”

Although the Division IV, Section II tournament at Bourgade High School in Chandler is still three weeks away, CVHS appears primed to dominate the meet, as it shut out three of the six competitors, including host Phoenix Christian High School, only allowing 21 total points: 18 to Valley Christian and three to Salt River High School.

“The matchup against the Division IV Section II teams has set the tone for the Cowboys to go into the sectional tournament in great shape with several No. 1 seeds,” Weir said. “We’ve just got to get in better shape. We’ve been working on conditioning since the beginning of the year, so we just need to take more time at it.”
